When Jazz Comes to Brunch
Le Devoir – August 5, 2016
As the famous French multi-instrumentalist Stéphane Grappelli loved to say, “Jazz allows us to escape from daily life.” We, at the Ritz-Carlton’s Maison Boulud, definitely agree with this statement, which is why in summer 2015, we decided to launch a series of musical gourmet brunches. Because of their continuous popularity, they have been brought back this year and will go on until December.
Held on one Sunday of each month, at Maison Boulud, these jazzy brunches have aroused a considerable interest since their beginnings. Music lovers and foodies alike come together in large numbers and it’s not uncommon to spot some well-known faces. It should be noted that these musical brunches at Maison Boulud always feature greatly talented artists, such as Colin Hunter, Carlos Jimenez and Félix Stüssi, all at the reasonable price of $85 per person. The enchanting setting in which these events are held definitely plays a key role in their success. During the warmer months, the brunches are generally held in the property’s magnificent gardens. However, when Mother Nature decides to be slightly less kind, they are moved to the hotel’s solarium. And, when winter arrives, the musicians’ performances move to the dining room, right next to the fireplace. Maison Boulud’s excellent cuisine also contributes to the musical brunches’ success. The property’s monthly Sunday offerings turn out to be quite refined and diverse. The menu options include half a dozen appetizers and main dishes, as well as several sweet items, such as the famous madeleines and Belgian waffles, which are made in-house. And let’s be honest, even though it is always exceptional, the Boulud brunch becomes even more delightful when it is enveloped by the melody of a jazz ensemble!
Spotlight on Colin Hunter
Maison Boulud’s next jazzy brunch will be held on Sunday August 14th. Colin Hunter, the brilliant and popular crooner, will be performing with his quartet. In addition to fulfilling his business duties as founder, chairman of the board and owner of the Sunwing Travel Group, Hunter has managed to have quite a successful musical career. Hunter, who is particularly fond of the jazz repertoire of the 1950s, loves to cover melodies popularized by prominent artists such as Tony Bennett, Dean Martin and Nat King Cole. The crooner, who is gifted with a warm voice, has a sound and a style reminiscent of Frank Sinatra. In fact, Hunter’s rendition of Sinatra’s Come Fly With Me is magnificent.
Because he particularly enjoys performing at La Maison Boulud, Mr. Hunter has generously offered to sponsor the institution’s jazzy brunches through his company. Until December, some of these events will thus be presented by Sunwing. For more information, or to reserve a spot at the next jazzy brunch, please visit maisonboulud.com or call 514 842-4224.
